Installing a Top Signal 55 dB cell phone signal booster in your vehicle is a cinch. Follow these simple steps:

1. Select a position on your vehicle roof and place the magnetic mount antenna. Make sure there are no obstructions (i.e. luggage racks or other antennas). Run the cable down through the gaskets in your door to protect them from being damaged or cut when you open and close the door. Make sure to leave a little slack in the wire for flexibility.

2. Find a location inside the vehicle to place your amplifier unit. Make sure it is ventilated and allows you to access the amplifier if you need to do any troubleshooting.
Please Note: Keep the amplifier out of direct sunlight.

3. Connect your components together. The 12" magnetic antenna connects to the outdoor antenna side of the amp and the small flat antenna connects to the inside antenna side of the amp. Position the inside antenna in a place on your dash or on a center console where it will be near your phone.

4. Connect the Cigarette lighter adapter (CLA) to the amplifier and plug it into the cigarette lighter/accessory outlet. Flip the power switch to the ON position. 5. Try your phone at different distances away from the inside flat antenna. Generally it is best to be within a few feet of the inside antenna. Hint: If you are in an area where you have very little signal or cannot make a stable call you may want to hold the small flat antenna on the back of your phone for best results.

The answer is "Yes" but with some exceptions.

Here are the details:

The Top Signal 5dB Omni-directional antenna is 22" tall and has a very broad receive pattern. This means that it can receive signal from all angles and directions and will still provide the full 5dB of gain.

The Cellphone-Mate CM100-L is 30" tall and is great for areas where the signal is coming in to you from the same elevation. So if you are located in a flat area and have a tower within line of sight then you will get the full 9 dB of gain.

So let's say you want to put an antenna out on your cabin in the middle of Montana. With all the trees and hills chances are that you aren't getting a clear line of sight to the tower. When you are getting ready to install a cellular amplifier system it is very important to use the right cable for the job.

In determining which cable to use for your cellular amplifier system for building or home there are some important questions you will need to ask:

1. How many feet of cable will I need to run?
2. Where will I run the cable (i.e. through ducting or in a drop ceiling)
3. I have extra RG-6 TV coax can I just run it?

To simplify the process Powerful Signal includes 50 OHM Low Loss 400 type cable in nearly all of their Wilson cellular building systems. We have found this to be the most efficient cable to use for most building systems. Some of our smaller systems use 75 OHM RG-6 Type coax which is a more lossy coax and is not designed for long runs with cellular technology.

In situations where you will need a very long run of cable or need to run cable through a plenum air space we offer RFS 1/2" plenum rated cable.

They have removed the antenna directly attached to the cellular amplifier and replaced it with a nice desktop antenna that is connected to the cellular amplifier with about 5' of coax. This allows the amplifier to be in a different location than the amplifier. For example, place the antenna on a shelf and put the amplifier down behind something out of site. The new antenna does not require any mounting and can be set on any flat surface.

Cellphone-Mate has released a new version (Version 3) of their 3 watt mobile amplifier. The new Cellphone-Mate CM2000-WL-40 has a new case, new connectors and new performance.

Step 3: Solutions that will help eliminate weak cell signals.

Now that we have identified our cell phone provider and the reasons for our weak signal, we're going to cover ways to eliminate weak signal. In a mobile situation there are various options on the market. We'll cover the main two: Wired and Wireless.

Just a few years ago you could purchase an external antenna and an adapter for virtually any phone out there. You could plug the adapter into your phone and it would send the signal out through an external antenna mounted outside your car. Those days are gone as there are very few phones available that have an external antenna jack. Enter the wireless amplifier.

Step 2: Location, Location, Location: Where do you use your phone the most?

We use our phones in a variety of places: At home, at work or traveling. With the advances in cell phone roaming plans and individual carrier's coverage we can travel just about anywhere and use our cell phones. For this particular section we are going to focus on mobile cell phone solutions.

In your car you are surrounded by metal which weakens the signal your cell phone receives and sends. As you travel, obstructions can also interfere with your signal: Trees, mountains, buildings etc. Each cell phone company has an assigned frequency they use and your reception will depend on which frequency they use and the location of their tower.

Carriers like Verizon, AT&T, US Cellular and Alltel use the 800 MHz frequency which will travel into buildings and around obstructions. Sprint and T-Mobile on the other hand use primarily the 1900 MHz band which is fine for outdoors or along major highways, but has a much shorter broadcast distance than 800 MHz. When I am traveling in rural areas Verizon and Alltel usually provide the best rural coverage. To find out which frequency your carrier uses visit Wireless Advisor and type in your zip code.

We've all been there: You go to make a phone call and your call drops. Someone tries to call you and there's no one there. You stand in one corner of the room with your head turned to one side, elbow out and one leg up in the air. Still no go. What do you do? Step1: Who is your cell service provider and what is your signal strength?

Your current major service providers in the United States are Sprint, AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile.

How many bars do you have at your location?
Most phones need at minimum of -100 dBm (1 bar) for a call to go through. Contrary to popular belief you do NOT need 5 bars to make a call.

For those who are more technically inclined most phones have a test mode that allows you to see your signal strength in a number form referred to as decibels (-dBm).
